What Is Cryogenic Cleaning? Understanding the Dry Ice Cleaning Process for Cars

Modern automotive care uses many different innovative ways to clean your cars and detail them. Cryogenic cleaning is one of these many methods. You may also know it as dry ice cleaning for cars. This method has become quite popular for how efficient it is. It is safe & doesn’t scratch your car. No chemicals or abrasive materials are used in this method.

This eco-friendly car cleaning method uses solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) pellets that are propelled at high speeds to clean the surface of your four-wheeler. We’ll explore its benefits and highlight how it complements Protector Automotive’s PPF & window tint films.

What Is Cryogenic Cleaning?

Cryogenic car cleaning means blasting dry ice pellets at the surface of your vehicle to get rid of contaminants. These pellets are frozen CO2 particles that can remove dirt, grease, oil, and other sorts of residue from your car. Compressed air accelerates these particles and directs them toward different areas on your vehicle. The science behind this method is interesting.

We call this method sublimation. It means dry ice goes directly from a solid state to a gas at -78.5°C (-109.3°F); it bypasses the liquid state. When it strikes the surface of your vehicle, it vaporizes right away. Micro-explosions happen that end up cleaning the painted areas.

If you’re worried about paint protection preparation, cryogenic washing is the best method. But make sure you’ve installed a PPF film on your vehicle perfectly well. Let’s learn more.

How Cryogenic Washing Works

The cryogenic cleaning process has three controlled stages. These stages work together to clean your automation surface without moisture or chemical/abrasive damage. We’ll give you a detailed breakdown of all three car surface cleaning methods, so you can see why it’s the go-to method for vehicle owners who don’t want car washing to ruin the car’s paint.

Pellet Propulsion

The cryogenic process starts with dry ice pellets. They are a few millimeters in size. A highly specialized compressed air system accelerates them. This system determines not only the air pressure in question but also the size and volume of these CO2 pellets.

So, these pellets travel at exceptionally high velocities to hit the painted surface of your car. They impact your car with enough force to dislodge all tough-to-remove contaminants. This method easily targets all sensitive and complex automotive parts thoroughly.

Thermal Shock and Impact

When these dry ice pellets make contact with your car’s painted surface, they transfer their intense cold to your four-wheeler. Solid CO2 is at around -78.5°C (-109.3°F). This sudden cold exposure leads to a major temperature difference between the pellets and the dirt particles on your car. This temperature difference causes a thermal shock.

This thermal shock makes tiny cracks and embrittlement appear in these contaminants. They break their adhesion to your car’s surface and become “unstuck.” Also, the kinetic energy from these speedy pellets dislodges the loosened dirt & grime mechanically (but without scratching or abrading the painted surface). As this process isn’t relying on toxic chemicals or scrubbing, it maintains the integrity of your car’s delicate paintwork.

Sublimation and Debris Removal

Dry ice pellets are very different from your usual abrasive media cleaning methods. They do not leave residue because they immediately sublimate. They turn into CO2 gas just after they have hit your car. This way, there is no liquid involved in the whole process.

As each pellet evaporates, it expands in volume by some 500 times. This volume expansion generates a micro-explosion effect that lifts away the fragmented contaminants. However, this sublimation leaves behind a completely dry and residue-free surface that doesn’t need additional rinsing, wiping, or drying. There’s also virtually no moisture involved.

Automotive Detailing Techniques & Applications

Many areas use cryogenic car cleaning. We can suggest using a Protector Mat when you want to make sure that your vehicle’s painted surface has extra protection. Check out the following areas where you see cryogenic washing methods in application:

  • Engine Bay Cleaning: Engine bay cleaners use cryogenic methods to remove oil, grease, and carbon buildup from an engine’s delicate wiring and sensors. They don’t have to disassemble the whole engine or expose it to water.
  • Undercarriage & Suspension: You can use cryogenic vehicle cleaning to lift mud and road debris from hard-to-reach chassis parts, suspension arms, wheel wells, etc.
  • Interior Detailing: If you want to safely clean your cockpit plastics, dashboards, air vents, and carpets by lifting grime, use dry ice cleaning. This method also makes your car free of harmful bacteria.
  • Paint Prep: You can thoroughly remove different contaminant types before applying PPF films or window tint on your car with this method.

Why Cryogenic Cleaning: 4 Key Benefits

  • No Water or Chemical Waste: This car cleaning method produces no wastewater or harmful residues. It’s environmentally responsible and preserves local ecosystems.
  • Surface Safety: If you want to wash your delicate automotive materials (like plastics or paint finishes), that’s when cryogenic car cleaning is your go-to choice.
  • Faster & More Efficient: This method cleans all complex areas that you can’t reach via traditional car cleaning methods. There’s no drying time required as well.
  • Ideal for Professional Detailing: Its precision and effectiveness prepare your car’s painted surface for further care steps. You can add paint protection films and window tint. Maximize these treatments’ performance and durability cryogenically.
